One Community/One Vision 

Ensuring Equity of Opportunity

In an era when financial constraints and family dynamics can limit a child’s access to extended learning opportunities, public schools have a particularly important role in closing this opportunity gap. 

A core value of our community and the AASD is that participation in curricular and co-curricular opportunities should not be limited by an ability to pay. Ensuring equitable public school outdoor facilities through the One Community/One Vision campaign guarantees that all students have access to these essential co-curricular activities.  

Lastly, One Community/One Vision sends an important message to current and future AASD students that we care about them and that we expect them to excel in all areas of life. 

It is important to note that the synthetic turf on each of the fields that were installed during the previous phase are already increasing their use and, thus, value for all students. 

Our three facilities can now be used throughout the school day and school year. The most profound-immediate impact has been the use of our outdoor fields by all students through our physical education classes. In addition, band and cheer leading groups are now using the fields for their activities. 

The fields also serve as practice and competition space for numerous sports beyond football and soccer, including lacrosse, baseball and softball. Many days, the facilities are being used early in the morning and well into the evening.

  • Schools: District has an obligation to assure that all AASD students have access to similar facilities.
  • Fundraising: Because schools don’t have the same opportunity to raise private dollars, this comprehensive campaign assures that dollars will go to equalize opportunity.


  • Students: 70% of AASD students participate in at least one co-curricular activity. The more opportunities, the more participation and the higher the grade point average.
  • Economic: For the vast majority of AASD students, school- sponsored co-curricular activities will be the only organized activities that they will experience. Private club fees and the level of required parent participation can be limiting for student participation. 


  • Students: Participation in co-curricular activities in high school increases student engagement in the overall school experience. The most significant impact of co-curricular participation is experienced by students coming from low-income households. (Everson & Milsap, 2005)
  • Community: AASD outdoor facilities are a resource to our broader community adult- and children-based community groups (e.g. lacrosse, youth football, soccer, and rugby)
